Earth Day New York is partnering with New York City Council Members Gail Brewer and Simcha Felder to promote My Green New York, aninitiative to encourage New Yorkers to switch from plastic to canvasand go green in their everyday lives.
My Green New York will distribute 5000 free canvas bags in neighborhoods across New York City. The bags will be launched at EarthFair at Grand Central on April 18th and 19th. Stephanie J. Block, the actress who plays Elphaba, the wicked witch from the Broadway smash Wicked will make a apecial appearance on-stage, throwing bags out to the crowd.
The bags will also be given out at the EarthNight party on April 22nd- an Earth Day New York/Green Drinks/Eco-Fashion Show soirée at The Park on 10th Avenue and 18th Street. In addition to distribution at EarthFair and EarthNight, My Green New York bags will be given to all Earth Day New York volunteers, including those participating in special "Take Action for Earth Day" projects being coordinated by the Sustainable South Bronx, Trees New York, and the BioBus.
Earth Day New York will be coordinating with City Council Members Gail Brewer and Simcha Felder as well as State Senator Eric Schneiderman to distribute the bags be at community events and at local Farmers Markets. By raising awareness through promotions and press the mission of My Green New York is to educate New Yorkers about the importance of using canvas bags and making other eco-friendly lifestyle changes.
NYC high school students submitted original artwork for My Green New York which were then showed at an exhibition at City Hall. Ultimately, three designs were chosen for the 5000 bags. Below are the winning designs:
