Sustainable Planet Film Festival

Launched in 2005 as to celebrate the UNESCO decade for Sustainable Education, with whom I am a marketing team member, the festival aims to inspire the attendees (as well as global citizens through webinars) to adopt Sustainable lifestyles, have them meet several visionary minds and educate them about the alternative options they have. The movies showcase community building efforts and/or environmental care practices.

Parallel to the film festival, we are also organizing the Sustainable Steward Gala, which celebrates 8 unique sustainability personalities in the categories of art, business, lifestyle, entertainment, culinary
delight, personal development, sports and eco tourism. The festival has already been produced in three different countries.

MOVIES FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD

Films that have been entered in the Sustainable Planet film festival since 2005 come from India, Belgium, the USA, France, Haiti, Lebanon, Germany, Australia and Brazil  The movies showcase community building
efforts and/or environmental care practices.  The opening documentary for the 2009 edition is made by Award Winning Director Tad Fettig, whose PBS series “e2” deals with the economies of being environmentally conscious. This series will shortly be featured on the Green Sundance Channel.

VISIONARY MINDS WILL ADDRESS THE AUDIENCE

With the hard reality of declining established corporations, new economies and social values are growing and all the eyes are on the green economy. The numbers of early adopters of this new paradigm are 50 million American citizens and many questions are rising as to who is doing what, where to go and what to buy? We have therefore lined up a group of visionary minds, who will share their experience in the green market. The audience will hear from bestselling author & Green Sundance tv host Josh Dorfman, Dr. Jaime Lerner, Mayor to Curitiba (Brazil ), one of the greenest cities in the World, Steven Lovink, founder of Planet 2025, Hazel Henderson, CEO of Ethical Markets, Michael Ekstract, founder of Verdant magazine and Alberto Gonzalez, Founder of Gusto Organics, the first 100 % certified organic restaurant in New York and Pamela Lippe of Earth Day New York & e4, inc., just to name a few.

YOUR UPCOMING SUSTAINABLE PLANET APPOINTMENT

For its fourth edition, we have chosen to produce the event on  Saturday June 20th at the Bohemian Hall  in Manhattan, located at 321 East 73rd street. A Festival access pass ( noon to 5.45 pm ) is $ 60, lunch and drinks included. Include access to the Sustainable Steward Gala ( 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm ) and then the ticket price is $ 100. Living in the Edge: Community Based Governance in the Aquatic Terrestrial Zone
- Nancy Dammann, E3B PhD Candidate

Abstract:
Based on an ongoing study begun in 1996, I examine community-based governance (CBG) in the aquatic-terrestrial zone in the Peruvian Amazon. Debate regarding the potential and practicalities of CBG systems has been polemic and, within the Amazon, sometimes violent. Extractive activities such as fishing, timbering, and hunting provide for the subsistence needs and the bulk of income to both rurally located households and to poor residents of poor urban centers. The national government views CBG efforts as illegal and counter to regional economic development throughout the region.  With this study, I seek to elucidate the factors that drive community-based governance decisions and the landscape level effects of these decisions. I argue that recognizing the hyper-dynamic and hyper-diverse nature of the Amazonian landscape provides a foil to test our theoretical understandings of both resilience and CBG.
Combining analysis of field data from nine rurally located towns with regional data regarding demographic changes and fisheries landings, I find that CBG provides the study communities with a means to moderate rapid levels of regional change and provides the residents and communities with greater voice. Throughout the region and study communities, fisheries have been declining drastically. Those areas under CBG, however, have experienced a moderated rate of decline. By 2006, catch per unit effort (the best available measure of population density) was significantly higher than in areas without CBG. Catch also included significantly larger fish with higher average trophic levels.
Understanding the underlying dynamic nature of this landscape, in which both the majority of species and households are involved in various migration patterns, highlights the landscape level effects of CBG efforts. Residents of the study towns engaged in CBG have been more able to meet their basic needs in times of crisis and to resolve both emergency and long-standing problems un-addressed by the national and regional governments. In addition, even in periods of scarcity, they have been able to ship fish to urban-based members of their households, thus, helping to meet the needs of the urban poor. The aquatic terrestrial zones under study serve as nurseries for the vast majority of fish species; as a result, CBG efforts maintain areas from which fish can then migrate throughout the system. Results from this study suggest that we must begin to understand the role of these CBG systems at this landscape level and that we must re-examine our understanding of resiliency.

Water Under Attack: Does Natural Gas Drilling Threaten NYC Drinking Water?

A panel discussion and film preview

Thursday, 30 April 2009, 7 pm

@ The Community Church Assembly Hall 40 East 35th Street , Manhattan between Park Madison Avenues

$10 suggested donation

Did you know that plans are underway to drill for natural gas in the vast Marcellus Shale layer, which spans Pennsylvania , parts of New York , Maryland , West Virginia , and Ohio ? In New York State alone, tens of thousands of wells are being proposed over the next few years. Those who own the mineral rights stand to make millions of dollars, while gas companies would reap billions, yet they would be exempt from many environmental protection regulations, thanks to the Bush administration. The hydraulic fracturing process for extracting natural gas uses a toxic, dangerous brew of over 275 chemicals. If these plans go through, New York 's most precious resources - one of only 5 pristine/unfiltered water systems in the US - would be contaminated.

Recent research by keynote speaker Dr. James Hansen, Director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, suggests the need to reduce atmospheric levels of CO2 concentrations from the current 385 parts per million (ppm) to 350 ppm or lower in order to avoid climate change. The question of “the safe upper limit” is perhaps the most important research question of the century.

While the exact limit–whether it be 550, 450, 350, or even lower–is subject to debate, the need for proactive strategies to climate change is clear. Vital issues directly relating to climate change, such as alternative energy and carbon sequestration, are likely to drive domestic and international policies for the decades and centuries to come. This conference will discuss the scientific, political, social and economic challenges and opportunities associated reducing emissions and lowering atmospheric carbon levels.

You must register at:   http://350conference.org/

FREE ADMISSION TO MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK ON EARTH DAY, APRIL 22, 2009: LAST DAY OF   GROWING AND GREENING NEW YORK

Exhibition Explores Future of New York City and Sustainability

The Museum of the City of New York will offer free admission to all visitors on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, in honor of Earth Day, which is the final day of   Growing and Greening New York:  PlaNYC and the Future of the City , an exhibition exploring greater sustainability in the city by 2030.

The exhibition takes viewers through an imagined day in the life of the city to make the complexities of greater environmental sustainability in New York City vivid, compelling, and understandable, and by bringing environmental concerns to life on an individual, human scale.  Organized in terms of the hours of a typical day in the life of a New Yorker—8 a.m., for example, discusses traffic and transportation—the exhibition explores six essential areas addressed by the Bloomberg Administration's ambitious five-borough plan for sustainability by 2030:   water ;   transportation ;   energy ;   open space ;   land ; and   climate change .   Growing and Greening New York   features architectural models, interactive displays, diagrams, renderings, photographs, hands-on examples of new materials, videos, and more, many of which have been created expressly for the exhibition.

Green Schools NYC Conference Unites NYC Schools to Take Action on Sustainability and Climate Change

Sat April 18, 2008 - The Green Schools Alliance (GSA), a leading non-profit program focused on taking action for a greener environment, along with Collegiate School will welcome students, faculty, parents and administrative representatives from nearly 200 schools in New York and the Northeast U.S. to the first ever Green Schools NYC Conference on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the Collegiate School in Manhattan. The student-run event will be focused on greening local schools and helping them lead the charge in sustainability efforts.

John Shea, Division of School Facilities (DSF) Executive Director plans to announce the partnership between New York City Department of Education and the Green Schools Alliance-Climate Commitment to reduce the carbon footprint in NYC schools. Through the partnership they will measure energy consumption and carbon emissions from school buildings and take steps to reduce them 30 percent by 2017, part of the mayor's PlaNYC initiative.

Billy Parish, Co-Founder and Coordinator of the Energy Action Coalition and the young new face of environmentalism will be the keynote speaker at the conference. He will discuss current U.S. Government plans for the creation of a Clean Energy Core- a green national service program.

“The idea for the event builds upon three years of intense collaboration among K-12 schools to become more environmentally sustainable,” said Harrison Monsky, lead organizer for the event and a senior at Collegiate, “The rationale and commitment to sustainability exists; now schools want to know how to do it. The event will be a place to learn, share, and get energized about sustainability.”

At the heart of the event will be a resource fair where students, faculty, parents, and administrators will be able to meet green companies, non-profits, and other schools all with the common goal of taking action on climate change and the environment. Each organization will have dedicated booths where one-on-one dialogue can take place.

In addition to the resource fair, there will be a variety of classroom discussions and technical workshops on issues including recycling, carbon footprints, green energy, environmental curriculum, student action, green roofs, sustainable food, and technology for green schools.

Panel on Indigenous Mobilization in the Americas
Wednesday, January 21, 2009
Time: 7:30 pm
Location: Brecht Forum, 431 West Street in NYC
Indigenous Peoples' Mobilizations and Resistance: The Case of 3 Andean Countries

Featuring Forest Hylton, Mario A. Murillo & Gerardo Renique

During the past several months, Indigenous Peoples in Latin America have again occupied center stage in the struggle for democratic rights and defense of national resources and autonomy. In Bolivia, Indigenous peoples recently mobilized against the right's attempts to overthrow the democratically elected President Evo Morales. Now they are getting ready to vote for an historic referendum on the future of Bolivia.

After a successful ten-day uprising, Amazonian Indigenous Peoples in Peru forced the government to overthrow laws privatizing communal lands and natural reserves. It was a major victory for the indigenous population of Peru.

And in Colombia, thousands of Indigenous Peoples marched throughout the country, and into the capital city of Bogotá in a dramatic six-week mobilization, demanding respect for their territorial and democratic rights, and calling for the creation of a broad-based movement for social change.

Sliding scale: $6/$10/$15 (Free for Brecht Forum Subscribers)

Gallery Exhibit Featuring Freshkills Park to Hold Reception

Organization: Freshkills Park, NYC Department of Parks & Recreation
Freshkills Park and Claire Oliver Gallery

February 5, 2009

6:00pm to 8:00 pm

Please join us on February 5th to view artist Stephanie Lempert's GeoBiographies featuring Freshkills Park. GeoBiographies examines the history of land that has been converted from city landfill into parkland in both the Boston and New York City areas. The photographs reflect on the history of each carefully selected site and look at how our culture of consumption and waste has laid the foundation for each park. The intention is not to chide our culture of disposability, but to proffer examples of how certain communities have been able to band together to affect positive change. Each site's redevelopment is an act of optimism. By interviewing those who took charge of the problems and found the solutions, this series exemplifies our ability to take responsibility for past actions in our society and to move forward and educate ourselves so that we may become more responsible to the land. Although the Freshkills Park reception is on February 5th, GeoBiographies will be open until February 19, 2009. A portion of each sale will go to directly benefit Freshkills Park .
